# Context ring

The context ring sits at the right of the band's row. It shows how full the session's context window is, so you can save your place before Claude Code compacts the session. It updates at the start of a session and after each turn.

## Reading it

```text
◔ 42%
```

The ring fills as the window does, and the percent says how full it is. The limit is the point where Claude Code compacts the session when auto-compact is on, and the whole window when it is off. So with auto-compact on, the ring reaches 100% at compaction, not at the end of the window.

| Fill | Color |
|---|---|
| Under 60% | teal, with the percent dimmed |
| From 60% | amber, and the percent too |
| From 85% | red, with a Save notes button beside it |

Once the notes are saved the ring stops at amber: red means save before you lose it, and a saved session has nothing left to lose.

## Save notes

From 85%, press **Save notes** to run `/kotharo:work-save` before the session compacts. It writes a short entry in the branch's worklog: what was decided, what was ruled out and what is in flight. The next session, or this one after compaction, reads it back. See [Worklogs and continuity](https://kotharo.com/docs/worklogs-and-continuity/).

Once saved, the button reads `saved · safe to clear`, dimmed. It stays until the context has grown another 5 percentage points of its limit, or dropped in a compaction, so a turn or two more does not bring the button back. You can also run it yourself at any time, and the band counts it as a save:

```
/kotharo:work-save
```

On a narrow window the ring keeps its shape and drops the percent.

The context ring has no settings.
